GAME DESIGN

I still remember some of the first games I made. These involved using Legos as the pieces and dragging my brothers into yet another role playing adventure game complete with a map, resources and character inventory. From these beginnings came many more games. Lately I have been working on publishing some of the games I make. In this page I share some of my experiences doing this.

GETTING STARTED

I restarted the old hobby of game making while a married college student with one child, during winter break in 2009. My opening act was a war game: one of my favorite genres. Complete with custom made hexagonal board tiles, air-dry clay molded pieces (that my wife graciously helped me make) and card-stock printed tracking and resource cards, I named the game Medieval.

It had a War Craft feel to it and after drafting up the rules, I took it over to my In-Laws for a New Years celebration. About 3 hours into it, we were only half way done and it was time to ring in 2010 and move on. After that, I made some changes to try and cut the time of play down, but ultimately knew this was going to be a niche game. I had to come up with something different: With the same warfare feel but much more simple and family friendly.
