Banshee Dryer

Updated: Jun 22, 2020

A few weeks ago our dryer began squeaking with every revolution. After another week it was full out screeching like a banshee. I decided to investigate:

One of two screw holes for top panel

Removing Top Panel

One of two screws holding the front panel

Separating the front panel from the frame. Note the wires running through to the frame.

The top came off with 2 screws. Then 2 screws to detach the front cover and immediately the problem was found:

Damage to the bearing with skid pads missing

More damage to the bearing with skid pad missing

Luckily a couple searches on Amazon and I was able to find a kit and order it. I also grabbed a pulley wheel and a drum bearing just in case the front bearing was not the only thing wrong.

New bearing kit

A couple days later, I replaced the front bearing and felt liner. The bearing snapped out of place after I removed the light temporarily. The liner just pulled out. I wiped off the surfaces removed the plastic snap-out from the front bearing for the light and snapped and secured the new bearing and liner in place. I then installed the plastic skid pads in the order shown in the instructions:

New bearing, skid pads and felt liner installed

Being careful not to handle the sharp edge of the drum and 4 screws later, the dryer was ready to test. I put a wet towel in there and fired it up. No more screeching banshee!
